Wine tasting in Mallorca

If you’re reading this post and either you: a) love good wine or b) you’re coming to Mallorca soon then this will be a good read for you. Mallorca, Spain the island famous for amazing beaches also has around 70 vineyards!
Last week I visited Bodegas Bordoy, a vineyard 30km south of Palma, Mallorca.

The vineyard was started in the year 2000 and in 2004 the first bottle of wine was produced. Covering 22 hectares of land they produce 12 different wines at present with a combined total of 100,000 bottles a year. One point I love is that all the grapes are hand picked! Between the middle of August and end of September a team of 7 people spend 9 hours a day taking the harvest.
During the visit I sampled 6 different wines, I really loved the Fermanca rose, which was a very light tasting wine but 14.5% in alcohol content!
Our guide explained that the grapes in Mallorca have a high alcohol content quickly as the island receives around 3000 hours a year of sun and only 300 litres of rain.

During this year the vineyard like most of the industries in Mallorca has been heavily affected by the covid-19 pandemic. With alot less visitors and being closed for several months. Of course the grapes don’t stop growing so the team are planning how’s best to use them.

They recently planted around 200 olive trees on the site too so that they can produce olive oil. It will take around 5-6 years for the first harvest.
The wine that we tried ranged in price between 6.50€ and 9.50 € a bottle. Another wine that I fell in love with was the Sa Rota 2019, this red wine doesn’t spend anytime in oak but is made from 7 different grape varieties!

Driving in we noticed that at the end of each row of grape vines there was a rose. The guide informed us that the reason it was there is that if the rose shows bad health, it means the grape vines will follow. Pretty cool little fact.

The vineyard is open all year round and has a variety of events.
If you’re in Mallorca be sure to check them out and if you live in Mallorca support locals businesses!
